Lusby to Government Bridge

Lusby to Government Bridge (aka “the bridge”) is a short section of river less than 5 miles long. This section starts out with easy riffles followed by long slow troughs characteristic of the Grey Reef to Lusby float. It ends with riffles that are closer together and a little steeper gradient.

Lusby to Government Bridge is generally regarded as a half day float. It would not be recommend floating this section if there is a stiff north wind.

The “put in” is in the Lusby Access Area on river left. Lusby can be accessed from the highway via a gravel road from Hwy 220. If traveling west on Hwy 220 the Lusby road will be on your left a couple miles after crossing Government Bridge. There is a small brown sign designating Lusby river access. The Lusby road is a couple miles long and travels entirely through private property. Drive slow as you will pass through a ranch yard. There are designated parking areas, which must be used. Parking along the road will invite a ticket.

From the Lusby ramp there is public river access on river left for 2 miles. The right side is private until you reach the bottom of the Lusby Access Area. Both sides of the river become private, as you get to the old sheep barn on river right.

The next public access is at the Bolton Creek area. There is a very obvious blue square sign on river right and a hundred yards downstream on the left is another blue sign hidden in the cattails. The Bolton Creek Access terminates before you actually reach Bolton Creek. Less than a mile downriver you will come to the Government Bridge Access (just above the “old” Government Bridge) on river left. River right is private upstream of the new Government Bridge. The current boat ramp is just below the new bridge, but by 2010 there should be a new boat ramp a couple blocks below the bridge on river right.

Lusby to Government Bridge is a nice float that has several long flat sections, which require rowing. Boat ramp access is good even when the roads are wet. Shuttles and drift boat rentals are available at The Reef Fly Shop.
