9/1 Cooler weather and windy conditions have moved into the area. Fishing remains good and we had a half-day float the upper yesterday afternoon. The fish were still eating hoppers on a regular basis. Have several boats on the water today, so i will get back to you with a more in-depth report.
8/29 Had guides on every stretch of water from Grey Reef to Casper. Myself along with JJ and Rick took the McCarver boys on the upper (Dam-Gov. Bridge) and we had some good fishing. The nymphing in the am was extremely good (scud and drowned trico) on all the drop offs and riffles. We switched over to hoppers at lunch and did well until the weather moved into the area.
8/27 Floated to Casper today with the McCarver group from Houston, TX and the fishing was good. All six were beginners, all caught fish, and all did well on hoppers. Almost all of the fish boated were 18"+ and fought like crazy. We watched a golden stone get hammered next to the oar just upstream of Bessmer Bend. All of other groups on other stretches of river did well too. Nymph rigs fished well in the am and hoppers in the afternoon.
8/25 The report for Grey Reef remains the same. Had guide boats from the Dam to Bessmer Bridge yesterday and the fishing was good. A little slow to start and better as the day progressed. Plenty of fish on hoppers! Congrats to Henry Madsen and guide Ryan on a 23" brown.
8/23 All of boats out yesterday reported good-great fishing. I was guiding myself and found the fishing to be pretty tough to start. Tried various nymph rigs (leeches, pronce nymphs, caddis, etc.) and all seemed to pick up a fish here and there. At around 10:30am the nymphing really picked up and at lunch we switched over to hoppers and the fishing was awesome. Pretty much every spot that deserved a hopper eat, got one. Big fish ...nothing under 16" and several over 21".
8/20 Picking off a few trico feeders in the early am. Other than that we are still sticking to the basic nymph rig til the hopper bite picks up in the late morning/early afternoon.
8/19 Used the past couple of days to take a little breather and visit some friends in Victor, ID. We still had day trips this week and from all reports I gathered the hopper fishing remains good.
8/14 "It was the most hoppers I have ever seen...on the water." That was Seth's comment this evening. Apparently there were a whole lot of hoppers floating down the river and the fish were dining. From the sounds of it made things good, but the fish had a hard time eating the fly with so many naturals around. Depending on the day the lower floats are starting to have a decent number of "floaties" (weeds, moss, vegetation, etc.).
8/12 All of our guides floated downstream of Gov. Bridge today. Started out with a 3ft nymph rig in the am with an inbred golden and pine squirrel leech (brown). Nymphing was fair, due to the floating debris in the river...it was tough to get a clean drift. At 11:30 we switched over to hoppers, which gave us a pretty steady bite for the rest of the day. Congrats to Judy Oliphant on a stout 23.5" cutbow on a 4wt and tan frankenhopper!
8/11 Had five boats from Lusby down today and it sounded like everyone had a good day. The bite below Lusby was tough in the am but once the fish got on hoppers it was game on. Picking up alot of fish on the banks but there are spots in the middle of the river that are worth fishing with a big hopper. Congrats to Dick Savidge of CO on a 23" cutbow on a size 6 dbl decker!
8/8 6:03pm Our guides just got off the water and from what I heard it was borderline amazing. Four of our boats spent their day from Gov. Bridge to Casper while one afternoon half day stuck to the upper. Ryan couldn't get the grin off his face, refering to the fishing as silly. He fished an inbred golden and a pine squirrel leech (brown) about 3ft under an indicator in the morning...pounding banks. At about noon he switched over to a hopper and that was it. Congrats to Tim Trop of Houston, TX and guide Ryan on a 23" cutbow...of course on a hopper. Congrats to Mike Vase of Rock Springs, WY on a North Platte Grey Reef GRAND SLAM...all on a Morrish hopper!
8/7 Yesterday was just one of those days. Big fish eating nymphs/streamers in the morning and big fish eating hoppers in the afternoon. We had 6 boats on the water yesterday and I'm sure almost everyone caught fish over 21" on big foam. It was the first day in a while we had a decent breeze. It looks like we have more of the same forecasted for today. Doing well with tan, yellow, and green hopper patterns. Congrats to Dave Kros on a 21" PURE cutthroat on a hopper.
8/5 condt...They boys on the lower river had a pretty solid hopper bite in the afternoon. Single hopper, tight to the bank and the fish did the rest!
8/5 Last night's rain event made for a muddy "burp" below Gov. Bridge. Our three boats that floated the upper (Grey Reef-Gov. Bridge) just got in and it sounded like the hopper thing was lackluster again. Some spots fished well, others not so much. We had zero wind today which doesn't help the situation but it looks like they have 15mph forecasted for tommorrow pm. Still waiting on our lower river boats to get back...I will report again later this evening. Congrats to the Carlson group and guide Ryan on a 22" brown, hopper style!
8/4 Well we have some mixed reports. A couple of days ago the hopper fishing on the upper was lights out! Today not so much, but our boats that floated to Casper did very well throwing big foam in the afternoons. It's been a little weird to say the least. We have had some very unsettled weather the past few days which could account for the "weird" hopper fishing. Congrats to Dan Bess and guide Rick on 23" cutbow on a hopper!
8/1 Hopper fishing continues to go well for our guides and guests. Most of them are starting out with a hopper/dropper in the am then switching over to a single foam hopper pattern in the afternoon.
7/31 The last several days have been pretty incredible! One day boasted 40-50 eats on big hopper patterns and the other yielded both good hopper fishing and a solid streamer bite. I spent the past several days with Mark Adams, an avid streamer fisherman from the Denver area. Yesterday provided us with a solid bite from pretty much start to finish. We put on this morning around six and the fishing was on fire but slowly tapered off with the blazing sun. Regardless I was really impressed with the consistency of the bite. Streamers of choice...black/olive bow river bugger and white bow river bugger. Congrats to Mark on a 23" bow!
7/29 Afternoons have really been giving us some really great dry fly fishing fishing on Grey Reef. The hopper bite at the Mile is present just not as consistent as Grey Reef. Its only a matter of time... Have four boats on the upper, one at the Mile, and one down low...will report later this evening.
7/27 Have had several of our boats fish hopper/dropper rigs all day in the past week or so. It's amazing the number of hoppers on the water and the big fish are starting to eat them. Did very well dead drifting a bread n butter and a PSL on the lower river yesterday.
7/24 Well, we are starting to see really good numbers of hoppers all along the river. We have had some really good days, especially those with a little breeze to help them into the water and diguise your approach. Had five boats on the upper today and it was dead calm, making for some "techie" hopper fishing-long leaders and longer casts. Nymphing continues to be good...6ft, 1-2Bs, poxyback, tan scud, soft hackle sally, etc.
7/22 About half of our boats headed to the upper river yesterday. We were a little skeptical after a couple of our guides reported tough days. The fishing yesterday was good! Lots of fish up on top in the am eating tricos and midges, and in the afternoon eating hoppers and pmds on the banks. The nymphing as always proved solid, with poxybacks, amber scuds, mini impalers, and PALS. Rick and one of his guests managed to pick up a half-dozen fish or so stripping an olive burgin bugger.
7/20 Floated Gov. Bridge downstream today. Morning was a little hit or miss for my boat, but some of the other guides/guests seemed to be doing just fine. Afternoon got better and we managed to hook up alot of fish pounding banks with a leech/worm and/or yellow sally rig. I can honestly say we did not fish over six feet (indicator to split) all day. Weather was awesome! Golden stones have about all but rapped it up on the Mile - hoppers are just around the corner.
7/18 Made it out yesterday and went for a quick streamer trip on the lower river. Brad and I starting out fishing a t&a bunker (white) style pattern and immediately got hammered several times by some pretty nice fish. We fished the fly very aggressively and we were suprised by the number of interested fish. A little later we switched over to a Bow river bugger (black) and pretty soon had a 28" hen brown boatside. Pics to follow on the BLOG.
7/17 Finally a day with some overcast skies. I'm not complaining but it's nice to get weather like this every once in a while. We will have to try and sneak out this afternoon...streamer fishing. The guys continue to report good fishing. The upper river has been tough for about the last week. It is extremely clear and we are spooking alot of fish sitting over the sand and up against the banks. Downstream of Lusby has provided the guys with steady action, throwing to the banks or tossing it out in the main runs. Congrats to Bob Kemper on a 25" bow and Ren Adams on a 23.5" bow, caught while fishing with guide JJ.
7/14 More good reports continue to come back from our guests and guides. Lots of fish starting to orientate themselves to the banks. Fishing short nymph rigs to the bank have been the recipe for success. Overcast days have also started to provide us with some really great streamer action. As for hopper fishing, Brad and I made it out for a little bit this afternoon and managed a 21" cutthroat and a 15" brown on a sz. 8 olive amy's ant...all within 150yds of the boat ramp at Grey Reef.
7/12 Brad and Mike made it out for a little afternoon streamer fishing yesterday afternoon. Brad rated it as some of the best streamer he's seen and they both managed alot of fish on a Platte river spider and near-nuff sculpin. Check out the BLOG for the pics of yesterday's big brown.
7/11 Had boats out on pretty much every section of water from Grey Reef to Casper. Everyone reported good fishing and the guys floating down low did well throwing short (4'), heavy nymph rigs to the bank. Congrats to John Colin and guide Seth on a MONSTER 30" BROWN on a hh mohair leech!!!
7/9 Sorry for the long delay. Had a chance to run down to Florida for a couple of days and fish with a friend, Capt. Greg Dini for tarpon. Check out the BLOG for some pretty cool pics. As for the North Platte...Miracle Mile is currently having a huge golden stonefly hatch-try fishing a sz. 4 tan chubby chernobyl with a inbred golden dropper. As for Grey Reef the water is extremely clear up top and is now fishable all the way to Casper. Standard nymph rig and we are starting to see some fish chase streamers (goldie) off the bank.
7/4 Happy 4th of July!!! Fishing continues to be good on all sections of Grey Reef, from Dam to Bessmer Bend We just had a substantial thunderstorm pass through the area this am, so we have not yet seen if the lower river has blown out...we will keep you posted. All of our boats floated Grey Reef to Gov. Bridge yesterday and caught plenty of fish nymphing an impaler and Mercer's poxyback. One boat managed a few fish on a hopper dropper...they sight fished to one large cutthroat and talked hm into eating a size 6 orange chubby chernobyl.
7/1 The fishing right now is borderline silly! Congrats to Adam Cross of Knoxville, TN and guide Ryan on a 24" rainbow. Congrats to David Robinson on a 23.5" brown and his dad Chuck Robinson of Cleveland, OH on a 25" brown. Congrats to Bob Rowe and guide Seth on a 23" cutbow. All of these fish along with many others were boated today. The guys have been floating all the stretches from Grey Reef to Bessmer Bend. Huge yellow sally hatches have been a daily afternoon occurence on some of the lower stretches and we've even managed a few on dries. Golden stones have started to pop up at the Mile with the bulk of the hatch predicted to go in the next several weeks.
6/30 The water below Gov. Bridge is clearing up nicely! From the reports I've gathered Bur of Rec. is and will be dropping the water down to 5,000cfs for the month of July. As for the fishing...the Sullivan group had a unbelievable day yesterday floating the upper river hooking more fish than could be counted. Poxyback's, cdc pmd's, and soft hackle sally's are becoming the bugs of choice.
6/28 Well the Lacey group from CA had three great days of fishing! Same drill, stick to soft water, worm/pmd and the fish took care of the rest. These guys caught plenty of fish in the 20"+ category and one guest even went home we a grand slam. Grey Reef is borderline on fire. Made a quick trip up to the Mile yesterday and managed a good number of fish on a chubby (tan) with a Pat's rubber legs dropper. Granted most of the fish ate the dropper but we did manage a few on the big dry!
6/24 More of the same...fishing continues to be very good and our customers continue to catch some really big fish! Congrats to Hank Warren of San Antonio, TX on a healthy 23" cutbow.
6/22 Talk about a big fish day. Congrats to Gary McMahon and guide JJ on a 24" cutbow. We had several more fish caught in the 22"+ range. For whatever reason yesterday the big fish were on the feed!
6/21 FISHING IS GREAT on Grey Reef! No crowds, good water conditions, and nice weather made today pretty awesome. Started out fishing a small impaler and tan scud and switched to a pmd dropper in the afternoon...the fish fed all day! Never really had a "slow spell" and we had two fish take us into the backing...not foul hooked in case you were wondering.
6/20 Water clarity is starting to improve on the river. The big wind that stirred up the afterbay several days ago finally subsided and the weather/fishing yesterday was on point! All of the guides/clients were pretty excited about their day and several reported landing double digit numbers of fish over 20"!
6/18 Running full tilt again! Fishing was good this am with the good ole san juan, impaler, and/or poxyback. It seemed to slow down this afternoon especially towards the end of the day. Could have been guide error because some of our guys seemed to think the afternoon was fine. SOFT water is key! Our most productive areas, without question were the soft edges and seams. I did have one of the most talented young anglers in my boat that I've ever seen. Trajen Berrett, 15 yrs old, is a stick and let me tell you he can flat tie some flies. It was a pleasure to fish with him.
6/16 PART II...Made the rounds today to check on the current water situation. Everything is looking pretty darn good, just with a little more water than we are used to. We have been fielding lots of questions pertaining to the Miracle Mile; what's it look like, how's the fishing, etc. I have just posted some pictures on the blog from today's excursion. As far as the fishing goes it continues to be GOOD and if you based it on the 15 casts I made out at the Mile today, I would even lean towards GREAT. Size 6 chubby cher. (orange) and a tungsten stone dropper, four fish to the hand...not bad.
6/16 We are getting alot of calls from Grey Reef fisherman about the current water/fishing situation. We had five boats on the water yesterday and all reports came back good. There was a fair amount of debris from a spike in the flows that took place at noon, yesterday. We expect the fishing to continue on, just as planned. Fish still feed, fisherman just have to adjust their tactics. I will try and post some pictures this afternoon of the big water.
6/14 All the boys came back with really solid reports. All five of our boats floated from Grey Reef to Government Bridge and from the sounds of it the fishing was good top to bottom. Worm patterns seemed to be the ticket and the fish are in fantastic shape. Clarity continues to improve and should only get better with the standing forecast.
6/13 Fishing below Grey Reef was going very well until the latest weather event. It's 4:50pm on Sunday and we are finally getting a break in the rain. I can honestly say that it has rained for the past two days. At one point every creek bed, dry or flowing, had water running through it. Of course this made a huge mess and the river is finally coming back to a shade of green. We cancelled all of our boats today but will resume fishing tommorrow.
6/10 Well, a little more rain and a little more water coming down Grey Reef. Unfortunately the river downstream of Gov. Bridge is running off colored. Our guides continue to come back with good reports and the drill continues to be the same. Congrats to Jay Clemente and guide Ryan on a 27" brown!!
6/10 GREY REEF is muddy downstream of Gov. Bridge!!!
6/8 Water is on the rise! Looks like we will be seeing 4500cfs before weeks end. As far as the fishing goes more good reports. Did go for a drive this afternoon and the water below Sechrist is looking a little stirred up after last nights bump in flows. Our guides continue to do well and we expect even better fishing with the summer hatches just around the corner. Congrats to Bob Ferguson of Vermont and guide JJ on a 23" brown. Congrats to Mike Panitch of Chicago, IL on a very large 24" rainbow. Lastly, congrats to local angler Russ Newton on a 24" brown caught while wadefishing the Outhouse Hole this morning.
6/6 Our boats down low yesterday reported seeing caddis and yellow sallies. Even in the big water most of our guides are fishing fairly shallow (5-7ft) and really concentrating on the insides, slow seams, and tailouts. Not to say that the fish aren't sitting in the fast water...but it's still early and the fish really don't have any reason to duke it out in the fast water.
6/5 We've had some fairly big winds the past several days but that hasn't stopped the guys from making a full day of it. Congrats to John Morrison of Charlotte, NC on a monster 23" cutbow. The river is really fishing well from Grey Reef to Seachrist with conditions improving daily as runoff begins to subside.
6/3 More of the same...fishing remains good! Still seeing a few baetis on Grey Reef but we have started to see the occasional yellow sallie and pmd. The amount of bank structure with the high water is amazing. Once these fish key in on the banks a little more, it should get pretty exciting.
6/1 All five of our boats had GREAT fishing today. As Rick said, "..it was just one of those days." Impaler/reef worm on top and pmd stuff on the bottom, all day. I made it out to the Mile yesterday afternoon to see the beast and managed to get in a couple of hours of fishing. Fished a size 4 orange chubby and managed to have three nice rainbows come up and eat the big dry. A few wacks on a goldie and I was on my way back home.
5/30 We have been really busy the past few days! Grey Reef is still rolling at 3400cfs and we have been enjoying the big water. Really concentrating on the soft edges and tailouts. 6.5-8ft, 2-3 B shot...Impaler and a PAL or jujumidge. Hooking alot of fish and they are BIG...some of the biggest and healthiest fish I've seen in 10 years of guiding on this river!!!! Conditions downstream are starting to improve but Bates Creek is still roaring!
5/27 They had another great time on the water yesterday. Most of our guys have been throwing the meat and potatoes rig, worm/leech, and catching lots of big rainbows. The river is way up so the guys have been sticking to the soft edges and drop offs, which seem to be holding good numbers of fish. The river is moving! Slow water doesn't exist in the same capacity it once did. Congrats to David Kramer and guide Stu on sticking two nice browns on the upper river.
5/25 Our boats just got back and they reported awesome fishing. Lots of fish moving to the inside edges with the increasing flows. The conditions below Grey Reef were a little cloudy this morning but improved as the day went on. Expect cloudy water the further downstream you go with the increasing water levels. I have to say that our guide staff is pretty excited about the high flows expected for Grey Reef this summer. Keep your eye on the blog...I will put some Fremont pics up later this evening.
5/24 Just got off the phone with the Bur. of Rec...Fremont Canyon is being raised to 500cfs today. This is the first time in 10 years...pics to follow on blog.
5/21 Sorry for the lack of report...been on the water the past few days. Water is up on Grey Reef and the fishing is good, really good. Mornings have been better for most, with impalers, PALs, and fb biot baetis being the bugs of choice. Afternoons have been a little tougher but still managing to stick fish in just about every run. Fishing from 6-8ft with one to two B split shot.
5/19 Grey Reef came up another 400cfs today. It's 6:00pm and we are still waiting for a few boats to get off the water.
5/18 Just got off the water and conditions are good. The water below Grey Reef is a little green but there is very little floating debris. The fishing was good in spots, fair in others...typical of increased flows. The most productive water seemed to be on the drop offs with various baetis patterns. It should be back on track tomm.!
5/18 GOOD NEWS! Water is coming up, will be at 2000cfs by midnight.
5/16 More big hatches and great fishing! Yesterday we had nine guide boats on the water and everyone reported good fishing. Six feet, a #4 or B shot, and a pulsating emerger/sparkle RS2 did some serious damage in the late morning/afternoon. Congrats to Mary Holt on 22" cutbow...and Dennis Newman and guide Stu on a 25.5" cutbow.
5/14 Yesterday all of our boats floated from Grey Reef to Gov. Bridge. We were all witness to one of the largest midge hatches of the year. It was a great bug day and the weather was fantastic. As for the fishing...tan scud, PAL, and foam wing RS2 were the ticket! Fishing is pretty awesome right now to say the least.
5/13 Apparently the cloudy water downstream of Ledge Crk. had no effect on the fishing. Most of our guides/clients defined yesterday's fishing as amazing. We had a huge midge hatch yesterday that consumed the river. Fished keyed in and from the sounds of it, never stopped feeding. Congrats to Frank Galli III and guide Rick on a 24" cutbow.
5/12 Just got a call from one of our guides on the water and Ledge Creek (4 miles downstream of Grey Reef Dam) is putting some muddy water into the river.
5/12 Fishing was good yesterday...all the boats fished til the closing bell despite the cooler temps and moisture. As for this morning, they forecasted us to get 5-10" of snow last night, I would say as of 7:00am we maybe have an inch. Will keep you posted.
5/11 1:47pm Have five boats on the upper river today (Grey Reef-Lusby) and so far so good. A little drizzle here and there and a steady 15mph northeast wind. Other than that the fishing conditions are favorable and I am interested to get a report later this afternoon/evening.
5/10 5:54pm...the guys just got back in and they reported great fishing this morning and average fishing this afternoon. Water conditions are still good on the upper as of right now We will keep you posted.
5/10 Wet weather has made it's way into Central Wyoming. It looks like more cold and wet weather is forecasted for the next several days. We still have several guide boats on the water so i will report as soon as they get off.
5/9 HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY! Congrats to Todd and guide Stu on a 23" cutbow caught today! I know it sounds like every fish being reported is 23" but we have been seeing a lot of big fish. Managed to sneak out for a little bit this afternoon and stuck a nice male brown around 24"...pictures on the blog by tomm. evening.
5/8 Our boats just got back in and the reports were good. The boats down low did well on pine squirrel leeches and san juan worms. As for the boats up top, tan scuds and baetis. The fishing is really good right now, lots of big, hard fighting fish continue to be the standard. Congrats to Brian Burdick and guide JJ on a 23" rainbow and a brown lost boatside (estimated around 20" to 22").
5/8 Well the Two Fly finished last night and as always it was a success. The biggest fish of the tournament was 23", a good fish but by no means a monster. The money raised this year will be going to the ARC of Casper. It's back to work this morning and I will get you a guide report as soon as our guys get off this evening.
5/5 The water shaped up nicely overnight and the fishing today was outstanding! Huge midge hatch started around 10:45am and was followed up by baetis at 1:30pm. Fished a tan scud and a baetis (foam-wing RS-2, big bear baetis, and/or pulsating emerger) all day anywhere from 8.5-3ft(indicator to split shot). Lots of big fish! Congrats to Jason Dunkley on catching numerous fish over 20" and one toad cutbow around 22". Congrats to Bruce Ecklund and guide JJ on a monster 23" rainbow!
5/4 Low water in Grey Reef Reservoir and big wind have turned Grey Reef a little off colored. It is still blowing about 60mph in Alcova but sounds like it should start improving this evening. Our guides are still out so we will keep you posted.
5/3 BIG WIND forecasted the next several days. Our boats just got off the water and despite the 40mph reported good fishing. Obviously you are limited to fishing only certain spots and wadefishing is key. The next 36hrs have winds forecasted to 65mph.
5/3 More good reports continue to comeback in from our guides and clients. The water clarity has really started to improve over the past few days, downstream of Bates Crk.. The weather appears to be degrading the next few days so we will keep you posted! FYI Two Fly will be taking place this thurs. and fri..
5/1 Had some cold/wet/windy weather move through the area the past several days. Today it finally shaped up a little bit and we had really nice conditions. All of our boats seemed to have had consistent fishing all day. Our boats spanned from Grey Reef Dam to Sechrist. Lots of fish are starting to move on to shelves/drops especially during the baetis hatch. Congrats to Gary Ghesell and guide Erik on a 23" brown.
4/29 Got a late start today on guide trips with a new group arriving this morning. Things were good to start, a little slow around the lunch hour, then border-line "lights out" in the afternoon. It was a BIG FISH kinda day, not many under 18" and two fish that hit 23". The flies of choice without question were a pine squirrel leech (natural or brown) and a foam wing RS2. Congrats to Don Coney and Ron Gard, of Dallas, TX and guide Seth on catching a 23" cutbow and a 23" rainbow!
4/28 Ryan Hudson stopped by to show off a picture of a 27" brown they caught yesterday evening. The fish came off the upper river, about 1 mile upstream of Lusby and ate a sz 20 baetis.
4/27 The last several days have been great, beautiful weather and awesome fishing. As always the weather should be turning just in time for the weekend. It looks like we are going to see cooler temps and a little more moisture. Regardless, the fishing should continue to be great and the baetis hatch should be on point the next few days. The bugs of choice right now on Grey Reef...anything baetis!
4/25 Bob Dye just got back from a little Grey Reef dam wadefishing session. He fished a Stalkup's baetis nymph and a sz. 20 PAL and hooked up 12 fish in a couple of hours. He was evicted from the the river by a blizzard which is still pounding down on the Alcova area.
4/25 Well I have to say yesterday was a drastic improvement over the day before. Lots of sun and very little wind made it a day to be on the water. All of our guide boats reported awesome fishing pretty much all day. Baetis starting coming off around 12:30pm and the fish were keyed in!
4/23 It stayed relatively nice until about 1:30pm. The wind switched to the northeast and began to blow around 20-30mph. The fishing was good to that point and then it was a mass exodus to the boat ramp. Despite the foul weather our boats stuck it out the rest of the afternoon and managed to have a good day despite the conditions.
4/22 The drill continues to be the same, fish long and heavy in the am (7-9ft) and shorten up when the baetis come off. Top rigs on Grey Reef have been tan scud or pine squirrel leech and Stalkup's baetis nymph/pulsating emerger on the drop.
4/21 Another beautiful day with great fishing. Congrats to Matt Wissinger on a 23" brown!
4/20 Well I have to say the last three days have been some of the nicest days I have ever seen in April. All of guides and guests have reported great fishing. We have been having consistent afternoon baetis activity, starting around 1-2pm. CONGRATS to Leo Schueler on catching 10 fish yesterday that went over the 20" mark and one of which hit 23".
4/18 Yesterday could be best described as weird. The fishing was good in some spots, bad in others. One run you would pick up 3 or 4, the next one nothing. The bae tis hatch or lack thereof, did not get going til 3:00pm and the number of bugs coming off was minuscule. Congrats to 7 yr. old Talon Bronson, who managed to catch several big fish on his first day fly fishing.
4/16 contd...6:11p.m. Our boats just pulled in and our guests reported great fishing with several fish over 21" being caught. The rig; leech, impaler, and/or PAL.
4/16 The weather this morning is awesome! No wind and and blue skies are going to make for a beautiful day. Stu and the Anderson boys had a great day on the water yesterday, catching some big rainbows on leeches, reef worms, and PALs.
4/14 Talked to a few of our guides at lunch time and they reported great fishing on the upper nine. From the sounds of it, a pine squirrel leech (natural) and a sz. 20 PAL was the ticket. We are still fending off a 20-25mph breeze today but conditions should begin to improve this afternoon/evening. Congrats to Laird Jamison on a 24" cutbow!
4/13 The river below Gov. Bridge is pretty well toast. Bolton Creek is running full bore courtesy the warm weather.
4/12 Our boats continue to have good success on the Grey Reef section of the North Platte. Made a quick trip to the Mile this afternoon and the river jumped up an additional 1000cfs, hence churning up alot of debris. The river upstream remained in pretty good shape with less debris and good clarity. Fishing upstream of the Bridge was good on nymphs...downstream...couldn't get a clean drift.
4/10 Today had to be one of the nicest days of the year thus far. The weather was fantastic! The people fishing around Grey Reef dam gave mixed reports at the shop. Some folks doing well, others not so. It's our feeling that on busy days it's best to dial down both tippet and fly size. 3x to 4X, sz. 10 egg to sz. 20 midge, just for some examples.
4/9 Getting guides out the door and just checked the current flows at Grey Reef--it's at 1000cfs.
4/8 GREY REEF FISHING REPORT...Grey Reef is currently at 760cfs. Our source tells us they will be raising it to 1000cfs and leaving it there for the time being. 1000cfs is a good level; better wadefishing, more protection for spawning fish, and more current moving you downstream. It does turn some of those "froggy" areas into fishable water. The fishing continues to be very good on Grey Reef with nymphs, as baetis start to make more of a daily presence.
MIRACLE MILE FISHING REPORT...the Mile continues to provide us with the most consistent streamer fishing. White and olive streamers are the colors of choice fished on a med. retrieve and swing.
FREMONT CANYON FISHING REORT...the lakeside Canyon, accessible by jetboat, has provided us with some excellent streamer fishing the past few weeks. Cardwell access and the upper canyon are starting to see some great baetis activity with good numbers of fish making their way to the surface on calm days.
4/7***GREY REEF will be raised 250cfs tonight and tomm. night, reaching 1000cfs by 4/9***
4/5 Yesterday we had boats on the water from Grey Reef Dam to Sechrist. A few of our boats fished both nymphs and streamers with good results. White seemed to be the ticket regarding streamer color, combined with a medium retrieve on a 22ft sink tip. Congrats to Mike McDonald and Jim Peterson on a 23" and 25" rainbow/cutbow! FYI baetis have started...should only get better from now til May.
4/3 Big wind this morning! It's probably blowing 30-40, gusting to 60. Everyone of our boats on yesterday managed at least one 22" fish.
4/2 Our guides have been seeing some awesome fishing despite the cold weather. Seth, Stu, and Rick did a late start yesterday with the Stryker boys and managed to stick fish the whole way down. Rigs varied from 6-9ft with the top bugs being pine squirrel leeches and PALs.
3/31 Current conditions at Grey Reef...partly sunny and NO WIND. We went from the worst wind of the 2010 season to no wind. We have some boats on the water today so I will report later this evening. It looks like we may see some substantial snow the next few days...we will keep you posted. Congrats to Robbie Wall on 25" rainbow!
3/30 Well our boats on the water yesterday managed to put together a pretty decent day despite the howling wind. We are seeing more of the same today on and around Grey Reef. The weather forecast is showing some snow moving in tonight and lasting thru Friday a.m. Standard fair this time of year, it shouldn't last long.
3/29 Wow...it is windy! My guess is it's doing somewhere between 45-60mph, no joke. They have SEVERE wind forecasted thru Tuesday night. We do have several boats on the water today and I would assume it's a wadefishing day. I will keep you posted and update once I hear from the guys.
3/28 The fishing continues to be good. Congrats to Jim Peterson on a 23" rainbow. Seth reported seeing a few baetis downstream of Gov. Bridge. It won't be long and the BWO's should be cranking.
3/26 The FLUSH is done! It's amazing what a couple of days of big water will do for Grey Reef. There are already loads of fish starting to spawn. PLEASE be considerate of our fishery and avoid spawning fish, especially walking in or around these areas. Our guides on the water the past several days have been doing extremely well. The Oppenheim boys had an incredible day today, boating a 23" rainbow and a 20" brown along with lots of others.
3/24 The river is looking really good. We will be getting back to it tommorrow with guided float trips on Grey Reef. Just ran a shuttle down to Lusby and the gravel looks nice and clean. Should be a great start to the spring fishing. Ran out for about an hour in the evening yesterday and managed to stick a pig rainbow on the new 11' 6wt Scott A3 switch rod attached to a Goldie.
3/23 Snow and cold this morning. We have a couple of inches sitting on the ground and it's still coming. It looks like we have on and off snow the next couple of days but with today being the worst of it. Went out to the Mile yesterday and managed to stick a few fish on a streamer. Goldie, bronze bugger, and a marabou white clouser produced the grabs.
3/22 SPRING FLUSH! As of 6 this morning the water at Grey Reef is cranking! The flush is going. We will keep you posted.... As of this afternoon, the water recovered nicely and the condition of the river is great, alot of sediment/silt removed and the river looks good!
3/21 More of the same. Our boats on the water yesterday did well with the standard nymph setup. Don't forget...the FLUSH starts early tomm. morning and will end at 10:00am each day. The first couple days are pretty nasty and the river will not recover water clarity wise before the next days flush begins. Granted it is fishable but don't expect clear water.
3/19 Still pretty chilly but the snow has moved out and the sun is finally showing itself. We ended up getting about 3-4," but a bulk of it has already started to melt off. Our guides have been doing very well nymph fishing the upper river. Seth was out yesterday with a guest and had a great day fishing a 6' leader and a tan scud/PAL.
3/18 Cold, snowy, and "hazardous" weather (as called by the weather radio guy) has moved into Central Wyoming as of 3:30pm. Right now it's raining/snowing and the temperature has dropped into the lows 40s/high 30s. Our boats are still on the water and I should have a report here shortly. I think tomm. will probably be a scratch with highs in the 20s and some potentially icy roads.
3/16 Had several boats down low today floating from Gov. Bridge to Casper. Water conditions are very much fishable and the fishing was consistent. Managed to move a few fish on streamers, landed several browns and a few big bows. The fishing on the upper continues to be excellent. Looks like we have a little bit of weather moving in the next few days so as always we will keep you posted. THE SPRING FLUSH IS A GO for next week! Also expect cloudy water conditions with this weeks warm weather.
3/13 Yesterday proved to be a little tough from some. With that said, today was a good day. The boats on the river managed consistent fishing top to bottom with several fish coming in at 21"+. A long leader(8-9.5') seems to be a going theme but don't rule out a shorter rig during the midge hatch. We do have a little bit of colder/wet weather moving into the area tommorrow. Would just like to say THANKS to the folks that visited the shop this weekend, it was a good one!
3/10 A little more snow and cold has moved into the area this morning. Forecasts show nice weather starting again tomm. and holding through the weekend. Now for the fishing, made it out myself yesterday and floated from Grey Reef to Lusby. With slightly cloudy water and calm conditions we picked our way down the river, hooking multiple fish in every run. The fishing is GREAT! The fish are BIG, they are on the feed, and to top it off we were one of two boats on the water. The only negative in an otherwise awesome day, the streamer bite was slow.
3/8 The past several days have been some of the nicest days of 2010. No wind, sunshine, and ridiculously good fishing made it the weekend to be on the water. Dean Applegate ventured yesterday and managed a 7lb.,24" monster on a streamer. The fishing continues to be about as good as it can be and there are only a few fisherman on the water.
3/5/2010**Winter Storm Warning** for Alcova and the Grey Reef area. We are suppposed to start seeing heavy snowfall anytime although it is calm and dry(gloomy) in Alcova right now 6:21AM. By tomorrow AM we could have as much as a foot on the ground with very warm temps slated for Saturday. A foot of wet heavy snow coupled with 50F air temps could very well be a blow out situation. It would be wise to not chance to the road to Miracle Mile if we get what the NOAA is predicting. Also, be careful going into Fremont. That road is not a plowing priority and if you get stuck you could be there a while. No cell service in the Fremont area until you get back up on the rim near Pathfinder. There is also no cell service at Miracle Mile but texts often make it to the recipient. Click the links on the home page (right side margin)to get current weather reports from 3 different services, current WYDOT road report and fishing reports. Please Take care.
3/2/2010 More good fishing on Grey Reef, Fremont Canyon and Miracle Mile. Miracle Milers are still reporting solid activity on streamers. Nymphing at the Mile has also been productive with beady leeches, worms of assorted varieties, eggs and midges. Some beatis being spotted out there as well. Grey Reef is its usual Old Faithful. Hard to go wrong with Grey Reef at any time of the year and now is no exception. Nymphing with the Bling Midge, JuJu midges, Reef Worms, PALs, Mercury midges etc etc. Eggs and leeches will be good company stuck in the corner of Mr. Trout's soup cooler right along with scuds and sow bugs. We are expecting seasonable temps around 50F all week.
2/26 Proved to a good afternoon to get out a swing a goldie. In less than a half hour picked up four fat rainbows 18"-20" on a pretty quick swing. The boats on the upper river had another GREAT day nymphing; pine squirrel leech, reef worm, and egg(chart).
2/24 The wind cranked up today but didn't stop the guys on the water from having a GREAT day. Nymphing was the name of the game, with multiple fishing over 21" seeing the inside of the net. I have to say the fishing has been on point thus far in 2010 and the size of fish is... pretty impressive.
2/23 Stu, Brad, Wes, and I slipped out to the Mile for a few hours and hooked up some nice fish. By no means was it "lights out" but everyone managed a fish or two. Brad landed a chunk of a rainbow, Stu managed a few eats with the two-handed rod (black peacock bugger), and as for Wes and myself, some grabs on a bronze bugger made things interesting.
2/21 The sun has finally shown itself this afternoon. Pretty quite weekend on Grey Reef, a small group of anglers made it out and managed to catch some pigs! The boy's from Freestone Films caught some really large rainbows wadefishing the upper access. The pictures were impressive! It looks like the weather is going to continue to get better this week...might be the week to be on the water.
2/19 condt...Went out with a good friend and his girlfriend this am/pm for a couple of hours. We floated from Dam-Outhouse and they continued on to Lusby. Fished streamers the whole time, had a few grabs and landed one fish, a 21-22" brown. Kelcie on the other hand fished a standard nymph rig (yarn egg(chart), leech(natural), and/or reef worm) and probably hooked up 15 fish. The temp. never got above freezing but with zero wind things were quite comfortable.
2/19 All is quite, the snow subsided and the sun is out this morning. I don't believe it's going to get over 30F today and the forecast shows more snow moving into the area by tomm. afternoon.
2/18 Seth and I headed out to the Mile yesterday for a couple of hours. We fished probably a half dozen runs and managed to stick some really nice fish on streamers. The fly of choice without question was the BRONZE BUGGER. That fly hammered fish! Staring out the window this afternoon, we have around 3-4" on the ground and the temp. is well below freezing. A good afternoon to get some work done.
2/15 Well we kicked off the guide season this past weekend! Seth, Adam, and Bobbi had a great day on the water. Adam convinced his girlfriend to go fishing on Valentine's day, sounds like a victory already. They reported great fishing and some fiesty fish. Strikes were subtle but the fish managed to fight pretty hard and they had the river to themselves. Lots of fish in the 19" range with several over 21".
2/10 It's been a pretty quite week thus far. Very few Grey Reef anglers have ventured out this way. The weather, aside from Monday has been pleasant, with breezy conditions but lots of sunshine. Ryan's last day on the water put a 24" brown and 26" rainbow in the net, reconfirming that we have some big fish this year. The weather looks like it going hold in the 30s for the next little while so it might be worth making it out.
2/8 It is cold and snowy this morning...a good day to get some work done. The size of the fish is the talk of the river right now. The few boats that have floated and the wadefisherman on the upper river have been catching some really large fish. Lots of fat rainbows in the 17"-21" range seems to be the standard.
2/6 Shaped up to be a pretty nice weekend. There was a really good number of people around the past few days and several boats on the upper river today. Jarrod Johnson, a good friend of the shop, landed a 24" pig yesterday on a streamer.
2/3 Looking out the window right now...calm and blue sky. It's amazing how much of this weather we have had in the last three weeks. It sounds like we are finally going to see some colder weather starting on Sunday.
2/1 The wind has kicked back up again but the fishing remains good. Seth did well a stripping a streamer(goldie) through the bottom of the Outhouse Hole. It looks like the weather is going to stay nice for the next 5-7 days.
1/29 The high yesterday was 32F. With blue skies and NO WIND it felt like 60. I managed to get out for about an hour yesterday afternoon and found a pod of around 15-20 fish rising like crazy. A size 20 black midgeling was eaten about every other drift until one cartwheeling rainbow put the rest of the bunch down. Tanner, from the Drake magazine was at the Mile yesterday and did well stripping vanilla's, goldies, and black leeches.
1/27 A friend from Laramie was out yesterday and had a great day wadefishing the upper river. Scuds, leeches, worms, and eggs were the ticket until the midges started coming off in the early afternoon. Today is looking like another beautiful winter day, with very little wind and lots of sun.
1/25 The temperature has dropped but the fishing remains good. If your headed this way prepare to bust some ice out of your guides. The forecast shows temps around the freezing mark the next few days. Nymphing is still the name of the game on Grey Reef, Miracle Mile, and Fremont Canyon but don't rule out a streamer and/or dry fly bite.
1/22 The wind has really started to pick up this morning and a few snow/rain showers have moved over the Alcova area. It looks like we are going to see some weather this weekend, with good potential for snow. As for the fishing, yesterday I slipped out for a few hours and managed to catch a 21" rainbow on a #16 Royal Wulff. That's right I said Royal Wulff! I honestly tried just about every "techie" midge dry pattern in my box without success. I guess sometimes looking like the real thing isn't always the best...sometimes you just have to stand out amoungst the naturals. Lee Wulff would be proud!
1/20 Yesterday turned out to be a nice day. Forecasts called for some substantial wind but it just never happened. The overcast conditions invited several fish to the surface during the pm midge hatch.
1/17 Well it was a beautiful weekend. Lots of sun, very little wind, and cooperative fish made for a weekend to be on the water. A few of the guides made it out this weekend and came back with solid reports. The streamer bite on Grey Reef was slow but the nymphing continues to be excelllent.
1/14 PART II... Seth and I ventured out to the Miracle Mile and managed to have some pretty damn good streamer fishing. A goldie and one of our test patterns were the streamers of choice on a SLOW swing/crawl. Several browns over 20" and lots of grabs made for some exciting winter fishing.
1/14 Yesterday was another beautiful day. Lots of sun and very little to no wind! The wadefishing on the upper riv
