ARCHIVE JAN-DEC '09

The home page, as well as the NPL homepage, now has a group of links that have all the info you need for fishing Grey Reef and Miracle Mile. There are links to current Miracle Mile and Grey Reef flows, weather reports, fishing reports, flight info, road conditions and maps of the river and surrounding area. If you have suggestions for links that we din't include let us know. Happy New Year, again! We look forward to seeing you this season.

12/29 Happy New Year soon! We hope everyboby had a wonderful Christmas and Santa brought you lots of fun stuff.

We've had mixed conditions on the river. When it is warm the fishing has been really good. The water is clear and most of the weeds are long gone. When it has been cold enough that fishing is a constant iced guide battle, the bird hunting has been a lot of fun. There are lots of birds around.

GREY REEF: Flow-500cfs Clarity- clear Temp.-39F @ Cable Hole Patterns-GREY REEF-LUSBY: pine squirrel leech(natural and brown), olive scud, tan scud, ray charles (tan), PAL, LAZY, pearl jam. GOV. BRIDGE-TOWN: frozen...

***IT'S NEVER TO EARLY***BOOK A TRIP IN 2010***307.232.9128

12/20 A couple of nice days have opened up some fishing opportunities for a few hardy souls. A( brown) pine squirrel leech, (tan) ray charles, and PAL have been our most product patterns. We are still seeing a few fish willing to eat a streamer on a slow swing or dead drift.

12/13 Finally starting to see a little warmer weather. A few fisherman have been out this weekend and the fishing has been good. This time of year you are better off to concentrate your efforts on the slow, deep water. The fish will collect in these areas, which require less energy and allow them to feed at their leisure.

Obviously there has been no fishing taking place. If we could get some form of a warm spell it would be worth getting out. We'll keep you posted.

12/7 It's around -15F this morning and as one would suspect the lower river is pretty well frozen. Saw alot of migrating waterfowl yesterday and will be trying to make it out in the next few days.

12/1 It's safe to say the weather man/woman misjudged the current incoming cold front. Once forecasted for the 50s today and tommorrow, the high for the next seven days is happening right now...it's around 35F. We are going to see some COLD weather the next few, as always we will keep you posted!

11/29 A few days of stout wind but today the weather has shaped up nicely. We are still picking fish on streamers pretty much anywhere below Grey Reef. As always the nymphing continues to be good with leeches, scuds, and midges being the top producers. Erik, Rick, and Scott Aune ventured out to the Miracle Mile and came back with good reports for both the streamer and nymph fishing.

11/26 Happy Thanksgiving! We hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving day! Thank you to all for our continued success! The season is on the down hill slope, but if your headed this way the wadefishing continues to be good. Keep your eyes peeled for nice weather...no crowds...lots of fish. Again, thank you for the continued support and Happy Turkey Day!

11/21 Well the wind picked back up again in a big way. The upside, it has managed to disturb the vegetation/moss on the upper river. Some of the runs, like the Junk Hole, have begun to clear out. The fishing continues to be good with streamers.

11/18 We are seeing some pretty stout wind this morning. If it's anything like yesterday it should tone down this afternoon/evening. Yesterday afternoon the wind went dead and we had a huge midge hatch, bringing a fair number of fish to the surface.

11/14 The streamer continues to be good at Grey Reef and Miracle Mile. Water temps are starting to drop so a slower retrieve had been the ticket. We have just about wrapped about the 2009 season but we will continue to keep everyone updated.

11/8 The Noordeweir gang and guides Seth and Erik fished streamers pretty much all day. They floated the upper river and mananged to land nothing under 19" in the am and continued to chuck the big stuff until around 2pm when the bite slowed down. Bugs of choice; olive burgin, orange blossom special, and bread n butter.

11/4 Just made a quick run to town and the water below Gov. Bridge is improving and currently fishable all the way to Casper. Ryan and client John caught a 26" brown yesterday on a pine squirrel leech. The weather has been beautiful and we have had the river to ourselves.

11/2 The river upstream of Gov. Bridge is slightly off colored but very fishable. Last night I walked to the Cable Hole and saw lots of fish up on the surface for the evening midge hatch. The water below Gov Bridge is still fairly off colored but should continue to improve with the nice weather forecasted.

10/31 It looks like we are going to see somevery nice weather for the next four to five days. I would not be suprised if the lower river experienced a muddy spell from runoff. Aside from the weather forecast the fishing continues to be very good with nymphing and streamers being the most productive.

10/24 Well, we've been fishing pretty much everything from Grey Reef to Glenrock and the fishing's been good everywhere. Dry fly fishing continues to be consistent on calm days and the streamer bite continues to hold up.

10/21 River is clear to Casper!! Shaping up to be a beautiful day! We had a fair amount of moisture yesterday. Snow/rain mix brought with it good fishing conditions. Seth ran up to the Mile and manged to catch a good number of fish on both dries and streamers. One brown, around 22" ate a sz 4 olive burgin bugger.

10/19 Wind is cranking today! We have a storm system making it's way into the area tomm. 40s, rain, and little wind forecasted at this point...we're thinking streamers. Our boats on the water yesterday managed to get some big fish to eat goldies and/or olive burgin buggers. The nymphing continues to very good with leeches, impalers, and jujubaetis being top producers.

10/17 Floated to the bridge yesterday with the Holt's. Lot's of big fish! Mary Holt caught several 20in+ fish stripping a goldie off the banks. As for the nymphing, 5ft...1 B shot...leech and jujubaetis all day.

10/16 The river below Gov. bridge is improving rapidly. As of yesterday afternoon the water was already a shade of green in the Narrows and I would imagine it should be completely back to normal in a day or two. Seth and Steve Flood of Ohio mananged to catch fish on streamers yesterday on the upper river. The magic bugs were a goldie and olive burgin bugger.

10/14 Runoff has turned the river brown downstream of Gov. Bridge. I will keep you posted on the conditions as they change. Seth and the Jenkin's boys from New Jersey hammered fish on streamers yesterday afternoon. The fly of choice was a goldie sz. 4.

10/13 Bureau of Rec. has canceled the fall flush. According to them it's due to a "broken" motor on the dam gate. Well, as for the fishing...it's been awesome. Very clear water, lots of rising fish, and a good streamer bite has made this cold weather a little more enjoyable. Congrats to the Parkhill gang, five first time fly fisherman who managed to tolerate the winter conditions and hammer the fish!

10/12 5:36a.m. Drove down to the dam to check the flush conditions and wow...no flush. Very irritating...I will try and get some answers and let you know ASAP.

10/10 COLD! It feels like December...if you a planning on heading this way be VERY careful. Hwy 220 from the Narrows to Clark's corner resembles an ice skating rink. The two trucks rolled over are a good indication of the conditions.

10/8 Well, it shaped up to be a nice day. An otherwise gloomy forecast brought temps in the high 30s and a dead wind this afternoon. Guides JJ and Rick came back with reports of a river covered in rising rising fish (psuedo hatch). One member of the Clarke group did not land a single fish under 18".

10/5 Rain and snow! Keeping with the tradition of a wet year, the Alcova area recieved alot of moisture last night. Suprisingly enough the conditions on the upper 11 miles remain clear. Our boats out yesterday reported lots of rising fish...tricos in the am...psuedos and baetis in the afternoon.

10/3 Congrats to Lew Sandler of Dallas, TX on a 21" rainbow, 22" cutbow, and 23" brown. The fishing remains good...the streamer bite is really starting to pick up. The water conditions are back to very clear making for some great dry fly fishing.

10/1 The Sandler group and guides Erik and Seth had a big fish day! Dead drifting streamers (Goldie, Burgin, etc.) seemed to be the ticket. The forecast appears to be more in the rain/overcast department which should fire up the fall baetis and streamer bite. In my opinion the best the time of the year is here and now!

9/30 Morning Tricos are still going strong and baetis are showing up around 11am...fish rising to both. Psuedos popping in mid afternoon and lots of little fish up on them. But, you will find some big trout eating the psuedo dries.

9/29 The Duryea's and guide JJ have limited out on sage grouse the last two days and managed to have good fishing...Mary Duryea caught the biggest trout of her life! The fishing today proved to be tougher the past few but the coming cold front should benefit the streamer bite. Talked to Bur of Rec. today and we are all systems go for a Oct. 12, five day flush. If it hasn't been good enough it should only get better.

9/26 Congrats to Jim Becher of Winston-Salem, North Carolina on a big old North Platte rainbow...a 25" pig!! We had boats on pretty much every stretch of river from Grey Reef to Bessmer Bend and it was good across the board. All boats reported a fair number of small fish being caught (which is a very good thing) and plenty of 'Grey Reef' sized fish. The water below Gov. Bridge has really shaped up and a few fish are still coming up to eat hoppers.

9/24 The river has recovered nicely! The afterbay is looking good and I would imagine the river below Gov. Bridge will be completely back to normal in no time. Our boats on the water today had another great day and it doesn't hurt that the weather is spectacular.

9/23 4:18pm...The river from Grey Reef Dam to Gov. Bridge is looking good. Once you get below Gov. Bridge it is very fishable but it still has a ways to recover...we will continue to keep you posted. Seth and Connelly boys managed to have a great day, good numbers and one brown that went 21+.

9/23 Grey Reef has lost 200cfs in the last couple days. Current flows are 600cfs. The upper river is in fishable condition, but will take a while to clear down low.

9/21 4:49pm...Just checked the water at Grey Reef...fishable but still fairly off colored. Fremont canyon is clear and Miracle Mile is the same as it has been but the road is very muddy.

9/21 ***BLOWN OUT***

Mother nature flexed her muscles last night...impressive storm. Grey Reef and all points downstream are muddy. We are confident that it will clear quickly. We cancelled all of our fishing and hunting trips today.

9/20 Got up early this morning to chase sage grouse and it was abnormaly warm...it didn't last long. As soon as we filled our limit with two VERY large male sage grouse (aka bombers) the temperature rapidly dropped and a light rain began to settle on the prairie. We have several boats on the water today so I will post a report as soon as they get in.

9/17 More of the same... A quick breakdown...the upper river is fishing great! Tricos in the am, nymphs in the afternoon. As far as the rest of the river is concerned, take your pick. Big foam flies and nymphs have been the name of the game on those bluebird days. If we get a little cloud cover the streamer bite has been fantastic...lots of chases, lots of grabs. The entire river continues to look spectacular, clear water and some floating vegetation. We have more 80s/50s on the forecast so the fishing will continue to be good and should only get better from here on out!!!!!

9/13 We continue to see more of the same. Greg and Christian Cisco of Jackson, WY managed to have a great day, especially afternoon fishing big foam dries (sz. 2 salmonfly) to the banks and down the riffles. I know what your thinking...I'm full of S*&t. Not so the case, it was one of the better days of big dry fly fishing for big fish I have ever seen anywhere!!! I will post the pics on the blog asap.

9/10 Well, water conditions remain great as does the fishing. The Malone group from California mananged to l catch fish on hoppers yesterday afternoon. As for the rest of the fishing it was nymphing, crawdad patterns and a cdc psuedo on a short leader(6') and light lead. It's amazing how few people have been out during the week. Our guides have been virtually the only boats on the river, reaping the benefits of very little traffic and great conditions.

9/6 Congrats to Jim Peterson and guide Stu on a 24.5" cutbow. Yesterday Chris Cohagen of Casper mananged to stick some really nice fish on hoppers...even one around 22". The fishing continues to be good from Grey Reef to Casper. Tricos, hoppers, streamers, and nymphs have been the name of the game...it just depends on the float and the time of day.

9/4 Seth was out fishing for himself yesterday (that's what he does on his day off) and managed to stick a 24" rainbow on a hopper...he estimated the fish around 7-8lbs!!!

9/3 Here's the skinny...the upper continues to host great trico activity in the a.m. We made a short float below Casper yesterday and the river was weedy! Lots of floating stuff made for difficult streamer fishing. The river from Grey Reef to Robertson rd. is still very clear and has little floating debris. Nymphing has been the ticket aside from the trico activity, with leeches and cdc case psuedos the top bugs!

8/31 Erik, Mike, and myself fished the trico hatch this morning on the upper river. It was fantastic! Huge numbers of tricos, overcast, and zero wind made for ideal conditions. Every fish was over 17" and several hit 20" or better. The river is fishing great from Grey Reef to Casper. This past weekend we had several boats fish dries (tricos/hoppers) most of the day and others get on the streamer bite.

8/26 Drove to Casper this afternoon and the river is back in shape...looks great all the way to town! We continue to see decent numbers of fish coming up to tricos in the am...between 7-9:30am. I made it down to the cable last night for a few hours and mananged to stick several really nice rainbows on a olive burgin bugger.

8/25 The river below gov. bridge is muddy due to last nights rain. It should make a quick recovery...we will keep you posted.

8/23 Guide Seth and Peter Krohn of Redding, CA managed to catch several fish over 20" on hoppers. The fishing continues to be good...we are still finding fish on tricos in the am and the streamer bite is picking up!

8/19 Well, the trico hatch in the am continues to exist in good numbers, it just depends on the day as far a the fish are concerned. We managed to pick up a few nice fish at the cable yesterday morning with a sz. 18 para adams. Matt Gelso and guide Ryan managed to land numerous fish on hoppers yesterday below gov. bridge. John Konopack and guide Erik had a fantastic afternoon of streamer fishing (sz.4 olive burgin bugger).

8/16 The overall condition of the water right now is awesome. Clear, very little floating debris, and still very cold for this time of year...it's the best we've seen in years! The fishing started out slow, we had a late start, but it really turned on around 2pm and from then it was lights out to the boat ramp. We fished a crawdizzle and sz. 18 pheasant tail, managing to land numerous fish over 20".

8/12 The fishing remains good!!! The bugs (sallies and pmds) are definetly rapping things up but we continue to see good numbers of tricos, caddis, and psuedos. We've even had a few groups do well throwing hoppers down low. Now is the time of year to start throwing the big stuff. Granted you might not catch the numbers you would nymphing but there is a good chance you will see a monster. BIG MEAL = BIG FISH Example...Matt Pohl of Austin, TX lost a 23"+ brown boatside yesterday afternoon.

8/9 The fishing remains very good. The Ruff group had great fishing this last weekend and managed several fish over 22". The drill remains the same...tricos in the am and leeches, sallies, caddis in the afternoon.

8/3 We are seeing a few fish key in on the duns(tricos) but the majority of fish continue to key in on the spinners. Otherwise, the nymphing continues to be good and streamers are producing some big fish.

7/31 Water conditions continue to improve. The guys and Kelly group had fantastic fishing today. The even had a 23"+ fish eat a hopper on top...not bad. The drill is still the same...heads in the am...nymph the fast stuff in the afternoon. I did mange to slip out and strip a streamer with some success. An olive burgin bugger on a fast twitch enticed several large rainbows.

7/29 6:51am...the water below Grey Reef is fishable, around 1ft of visibility. We will keep you posted.

7/28 6:32am...GREY REEF IS BLOWN OUT!!!! Last nights rain event turn the river a nice shade of brown. WE WILL KEEP YOU POSTED.

7/27 The fishing continues to be good...really good! Seth and Wes Swank/Tony Austin from Gonzales, LA broke a 3wt today fishing dries to some very large fish. They are forescasting for some overcast/rain the next couple of days...I'm thinking streamers. Just wanted to say there is some floating debris but the water (clarity) looks great for this time of year.

7/25 Apologies for the delay on the fishing report! We've been busy, actually swamped might be a better term. Here's the skinny on the fishing...tricos are ON!!! From pretty much 7:30am to noon you can pick your way down the river headhunting. Not huge numbers of fish up on the surface, but lots of pairs, singles, and small pods of fish on the insides tucked up against the bank/weedline. I just walked down the river this am and saw several fish in rythm, along with two rattlesnakes. One of which I subdued with my Scott S4 904/4 preventing my lab Allie from getting bit!( I literally smacked it over the head with the rod.) As far as nymphing goes, pmd/sallie patterns once the dry fly bite subsides .

7/20 The boys went below Gov. Bridge today and reported good fishing. The bug activity was slim but the fish remain on the feed. The upper river is still experiencing the heaviest PMD/sallie hatch on Grey Reef and the tricos are becoming more prominent every day.

7/18 We are seeing yellow sallies and PMDs in great numbers pretty much everywhere. Tricos are also starting to appear from Lusby downstream. The fishing continues to be great an it's only a matter of time before the dry fly really heats up!

7/13 PMDs!!!! We had boats on several sections of river today and it sounds like bugs were everywhere. The upper river saw a VERY impressive PMD hatch starting at around 11:30 am. A poxyback or FB biot nymph followed by a cdc case emerger or split case was the ticket on a short leader 5-6'. Every drop, riffle, or shallow run with current held fish...and lots of them!

7/10 Our boats have been reporting some very good fishing as of late. We are finally starting to see some pmds/salllies on the upper and the fish are keyed in. The golden stones have been going strong on the Mile. It's safe to say, fishing is good all over the North Platte. Water temps remain suprisingly low for this time of year and without a doubt the fall fishing should be nothing short of spectacular.

7/6 Water conditions @ Grey Reef are improving rapidly. It is fishable to Gov. Bridge and our guess is it should be clear to Sechrist by tomm. A couple of quick congrats to...Greg Cook on a 24" rainbow and guide Seth and Brian Sullivan on a 25" rainbow.

7/4 As of 6:27a.m. the water conditions at Grey Reef are very poor. We will keep you posted.

7/3 We had a rain storm this afternoon that turned the afterbay red. From the looks of things the river WILL NOT be fishable tomm.

6/29 The water continues to be in good shape all the way to Casper. Our guides have been fishing just about every stretch from Grey Reef to town and the fishing is great just about everywhere. Salllies, pmds, and caddis continue to dominate the menu. We've done very well wadefishing the shallow riffles and dropoffs.

6/25 All of our boats stayed on the upper today and had good fishing pretty much all day. PMDs, sallies, and caddis are beginning to become a part of the daily menu. The fish are really starting to stack up in the riffles and faster moving water.

6/23 Congrats to guide Rick and Scott Lee of Las Vegas on a 26" brown!!!!!!!!!!!!

6/21 Our boats yesterday had great fishing. A slight slow down around lunch, otherwise consistent fishing all day. The lower river is starting to see a daily yellow sally hatch making the riffles and drops the spots to be.

6/19 Not on fire but consistent all day. We hooked at least one fish in just about every run...but they weren't going crazy. Right now we're seeing the "tweener"...you know that in between hatch time. Midges are still going, baetis are fading, pmds and sallies haven't really started, and the fish are eating a little bit of everything. We did see a few caddis today on the upper, so it's only a matter of time before the summer fishing is full tilt. FYI...we did see some rain last night that turned the lower river a shade of...crap.

6/17 Aside from Dean Shaver's monster rainbow, the fishing started slow and finished strong. From what I gathered from the boys, fish here and there in the am and gangbusters in the afternoon. Midges seemed to be the the hatch of the day but the big girl ate a natural pine squirrel leech.

6/17 Congrats to Stu and Dean Shaver, an eight year veteran of the North Platte Lodge, on a massive 27" rainbow.

6/15 The river is really clearing up well. It looks great up top and is starting to look good all the way to Sechrist. The fishing continues to be very good and clients/guides cannot stop remarking on the size of the fish this year. With the lower flows and hopefully some calm days we should see some great dry fly in the coming weeks!

6/13 contd...Just got off the phone with Seth, he was 1/4 mile upstream of Lusby and having good fishing. His report...1-2ft visibility using pine squirrel leech/ san juan worm.

6/13 As of 6:15 this morning the water is clearing on the upper nine. It is fishable! We ended up canceling all trips yesterday due to the water situation but the few wadefisherman out there manged to pick up some fish on the PAL.

6/12 6:16a.m. I imagine this is what it would be like to live in the Pacific Northwest. It has been raining on/off since 1:30p.m. yesterday. Fly shop creek, Eagle creek, and every possible drainage between here and Gov. bridge ran with water. Before the river turned to mud the fishing was excellent, but I 'm afraid there will not be much in the form of fishing today. As always we will keep you posted.

6/10 More rain...it was a cool day with a very light drizzle but it did not bother the fish. The guys reported another fantastic day of fishing and we even mananged a few on streamers. Suprisingly, the strip was fast and the takes were hard.

6/9 The Bur of Rec dropped the river to 1500cfs last night. This slightly lower flow should make for some great dry fly. Water conitions are continuing to improve despite the daily rainfall. The fishing is outstanding!!! If your headed this way be prepared to lose some fish...these fish are fighting like champs.

6/7 ATTN:287 from Rock River to Medicine Bow is closed due to flooding. Sorry for posting this so late, it's been the case for the last several days.

6/5 It seems like the rain just won't stop. We had one hell of a storm come through yesterday that turned the afterbay a nice shade of red. Fortunate for us, it's back on track today. The fishing remains great, water temps are still very low for this time of year, and the fish are in awesome shape!

6/3 The fishing is great...the fish are crazy...we had one fish jump 6 feet in the air this afternoon. Needless to say the fish are hot!!! The upper river had a brief burp of muddy water several days ago...but it's back on track. There has been very little river traffic and the fishing is only going to get better.

5/31 The fishing has been outstanding the past several days! The best water for our boys continues to be the inside stuff and tailouts. There are a good number of fish sitting on the heavy drops but you need to pack on the lead to get to them. The river is clean with good visibility and very little floating debris.

5/29 Fishing was great today! The guys caught fish the whole way down. The bug of choice...LAZY. The water temps on the upper are still very low and the fish are frisky. June and July should be outstanding!

5/28 The water is still fairly off colored at gov. bridge but the upper is fishing great. Yesterday the fish seemed to be stacked up in the tailouts and insides of the main runs. The weather has been outstanding and the fish are fighting hard!

5/26 The fishing continues to be good. Long, heavy, short, light...they all seemed to work. We are continuing to have some great bug activity, today it was midges and baetis.

5/24 Congrats to Richard Schumann and Seth on a 26" brown. Congrats to Tom Flood and Stu on a 25" rainbow. This is not a misprint, both of these monsters were caught by our clients yesterday. The river is slowly coming up 200cfs/day until it reaches 2400cfs. Thus far it has had no effect on the fishing...the fishing is fantastic!

5/22 Today the upper river saw an incredible midge hatch. Back eddies were literally covered in midges. The fish were keyed in and from 8am-2pm it was on fire!

5/20 The fishing is good, really good. The boys on the upper today had a fantastic day. The river is fishable all the way to Casper and the fish are hungry. Small bugs up top (midges) and the big junk (leeches/worms) down low..that's been the ticket. We've been spending the calm evenings down on the river throwing dries with some very good results. Ryan Hudson stuck a 22" bow on a dry yesterday evening!!

5/17 The 2009 "Party like it's 1999" fly shop party went without a hitch!!! Beautiful weather, good beer, and lot's of folks made for a great time. Pictures and more details wil be posted on the blog ASAP. A big thanks to Matt Cassel and CLIFF!!!! The fishing continues to be great even borderline RED HOT. The water temps. are climbing and the fish are feeling good.

5/15 The flash RS2 was king today on the upper(Dam-Outhouse) public access. Guides and the public all came back with great reports. Lots of fish and some really nice ones rounded out a beautiful Wyoming day(60s and very little WIND). Congrats to NPL/TRFS guide Bob Dye and client Mike Pedersen on a beautiful 23" cutbow! FLY SHOP PARTY TOMM.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5/12 Water, dust, and cow turds...What do these things have in common??? All three were flying through the air at some point today. The wind was brutal!!!! All of our boats out today fought the BIG WIND and still managed to be successful. Fish were caught when drifts were made and Don Walker of Scottsbluff, NE had a tremendous day with Stu. Everytime I saw the guy he was hooked up! Granted it wasn't as glorious as it may sound...most of us struggled to just get a drift. It sounds like it's going to get better...the forecast says "breezy" not "windy" for the next few. The bugs are about the same and the water is still holding @ 1000cfs.

5/9 Beautiful weather and good fishing! The reports from the guides on the water and general public were really good. The only negative reports came from guys downstream (below gov. bridge) and the Mile. They still managed to catch a few but nothing like the folks on the upper 13. Obviously the BWO hatch in the pm continues to be the highlight of the day. JJ saw a monster rainbow yesterday feeding on top but they could not talk him/her into eating the sz. 18 cdc baetis. Flies of the day include...LAZYs, Jujubaetis, Stalkup's baetis nymph, SM Midge, and pulsating emergers.

5/7 Apologies for the delay! The last three days in Central Wyoming have produced some pretty big winds. It appears the wind should begin to tone down tomm. Despite the wind the fishing remains good and the daily baetis hatch has been producing some great afternoon fishing. Seth has been doing well with a PS leech/crystal midge in the am... and jujubaetis/pulsating emerger in the afternoon.

5/2 Baetis are booming, water is in great shape(to Gov. Bridge), and the fishing is on. The last few days have been excellent...lots of good sized fish! It seems the fish are sitting in all types of water...fast, slow, on the drops..almost everywhere. Top bugs include LAZYs, PSLs, PALs, jujubaetis, and split case BWOs.

4/29 Congrats to Dick Jennings on three fish over 23"(in two days)...one brown and two rainbows. The river is holding at 1000cfs and the fishing is great! Runoff from the last storm is starting to subside and the river is fishable to Gov. Bridge. PSLs, Reef worms, tung split case baetis, jujubaetis, stalkup's baetis nymph, and cdc bwo emergers top the list of fish catching bugs.

4/27....GREY REEF IS AT 1300cfs and dropping. Talked with the Bureau of Rec. this afternoon and due to the extremely wet spring Grey Reef will be brought down to 1000cfs through the month of May.

4/27 Just got off the phone with a few of our guides on the water today. They are eating lunch at Ledge Creek and they said there is still a little muddy water coming down but nothing too bad. The fishing has been good...not huge numbers but some really nice fish...23"brown, 22"rainbow. Top bugs include bh mohair leech, PSL, Reef worm, jujubaetis, and san juan worms.

4/26 Congrats to Tim Welch on a 27" brown...Congrats to Pete Huffman on a 23" brown. One client caught a 22" rainbow on a dry yesterday. It's been a good weekend! I will post a detailed report this evening.

4/24 Wind, warm, sunny, rain, sleet, etc....we've seen it all in the last few days. The fish are really starting to key in on the baetis in the afternoons. Today with the cool and overcast/rainy weather we should see a great hatch. So far today top bugs have been brown PSLs, PALs, jujubaetis, LAZYs, and a SM Midge.

4/21 Another day of warm, sunny, and calm weather. The Reef is quiet...only a few boats on the upper today. I did have a few folks sneak up to the Mile yesterday...the fishing was fair. The water is in great shape and the fish are healthy. Most of the fish ate tungsten stones, reef worms, and bh mohair leeches.

4/20 Finally warm and sunny weather. The fishing, of course, is good. Same bugs...reef worms, impalers, pearl jam, PALs, LAZYs, and PSLs. The water color worsened, slightly due to flyshop creek, but as of 4:14pm is has subsided to just a trickle. Apparently Ledge Creek made a small burp today but I will know better when our guides get off the water. Yesterday the boys managed three fish over 22" from the different anglers...congrats to the Taylor, Schuler, and Mcneil groups.

4/18 Congrats to Dick De Petris on a monster rainbow...24.5" by 14"!!!! As was one would suspect the fishing is still great. Clear water conditions to just above Gov. Bridge, daily baetis/midge hatches, and even a favorable weather forecast on the horizon...life is good. Our boats out yesterday did very well on impalers, reef worms, Pearl Jam, PALs, and LAZYs. If you get a chance check out the blog!

4/17 Cold, Northeast wind, and snow...that was yesterday in a nutshell! Despite the conditions we still managed to put boats on the water and the fishing was excellent. A Reef worm and a PAL were most of the guys bugs of choice...a few others were PSLs, LAZys, and Dye's Pearl Jam.

4/16 Report for the upper...41F...water is very clear...we had a great midge/baetis hatch yesterday afternoon. Seth and his boys fished the same two bugs all day and caught fish all day! Impaler and Dorsey's Top Secret.

4/15 GREY REEF IS AT 1704cfs. Our boats out yesterday had great fishing. The water on the upper nine is in great shape and the fish are hungry. Reef worms, PSLs, etc...continue to be the flies of choice. Lusby down has been experiencing some pretty heavy runoff so don't bother trying anything down low. I will be on the water today so I will post a report this evening.

4/13 Our boats on the water the past few days have been reporting excellent fishing. Yesterday, in particular, was defined as being "world class". Traffic the past few days has been minimal with very few boats floating. Seth, JJ, Rick, and Erik are all on the water today so I'm hoping to have an updated report and pics for the blog this evening. TOP BUGs include reef worms, PSLs, PALs, jujubee midges, tw tiny's, pulsating emergers, and LAZYs. The water from DAM to LUSBY is in good shape.

4/11 The water as of this morning is very fishable from Dam to Lusby. Our guides reported good fishing yesterday on PSLs, reef worms, impalers, LAZYs, and PALs. Water temps. on the upper nine have been hovering around 42F. We are starting to see small numbers of baetis on a daily basis.

4/10 Real quick...was on the water yesterday and we had some runoff issues. But we managed to have a pretty good day fishing and the water stayed a shade of green all day. The bugs of choice were PSLs, reef worms, imaplers, tw tinys, and hot leech leeches.

4/8 Another beautiful day...50s and very litlle wind until the afternoon. Report as of 4:22pm...water conditions below Grey Reef dam, good. Once you get below Lusby, Bear and Bolton Creek have destroyed the river downstream. Fly Shop creek is still doing it's thing but the afterbay is holding it's own. Seth called me at lunch from Ledge Creek and reported very good fishing and favorable water conditions with a temp. of 42F. His bugs of choice were PSLs and Impalers.

4/7 A warm day with very little wind...a nice change. The snow is melting rapidly causing everything below Gov. Bridge to be blown out. Suprisingly the water from the Dam to Lusby is still very fishable. Fly shop creek, the one right next to the shop mananged to pour some chocolate water into the afterbay this afternoon but as of 6:22pm the river still looks good. Water temps are hovering in the high 30s, low 40s and there are alot of fish on redds. The bugs of choice are stalkups baetis nymph, PALs, olive scuds, jujubee midges, and reef worms.

4/5 Well it's nice to finally see the sun. Yesterday showed us that winter conditions can show up anytime. 30mph winds, blizzard conditions, and closed highways made for a low key day in Alcova. Good news is the weather is supposed to be pretty decent this week and the river is looking prime. Various egg patterns, reef worms, and jujubee midges were the flies of choice today. We had a blanket of midges on the water around 3:00pm. I will keep you posted.

4/2 Our boats today duked it out with the wind but still managed to catch decent numbers of fish. Tan scuds, reef worms, LAZYs, and a bh mohair leech were the the flies of the day. I just went out to check the water before it get's dark and it looks great. I'm sure after a few days at 2000cfs it will begin to look even better. Congrats to Zach Watts, a first timer who managed to be top rod despite the not so friendly conditions.

4/1 Well the flush is working it's magic. Gravel bars are becoming cleaner by the day and the river is looking good. PSLs, hot head mohair leeches, scuds(tan and olive), reef worms, and various midge patterns (PALs,jujubee midge(olv), AC slayer) are the flies of choice. We had a great midge hatch yesterday afternoon with a few baetis mixed in. The fishing is turning on!

Real quick...I talked to alot of folks today that are concerned with the river staying at 2000cfs. I would like to say that in my opinion it should NOT be a concern in the least...it's a good thing! I know that for some guys it seems like it's taking away from the wadefishing opportunities, which in some cases might be true. But for every opportunity taken away a new opportunity is put there in it's place. Granted you won't be able to waltz across the river like you could at 500cfs but there will be new water, good water, opening up all down Grey Reef. High water years usually means better dry fly fishing because it creates more fish/rising friendly spots and more bank structure to throw the big junk(streamers) at. In closing DON'T be discouraged...if you've never fished here in higher water conditions, buck up and cinch down your wading belt...it's game time!

3/31 The flush is proceeding through Friday. When it is all said and done the BuRec will leave the Grey Reef flows at 2000cfs. This is great. Boat fishing will improve dramatically and the wade fishing possibilities will increase.

*****SPRING FISHING CLOSURE STARTS APRIL 1ST****

Fishing is prohibited between the two cables during the month of April. Float through and enjoy the ride, but don't cast in the Junk or the Cable Hole. They will be prime for the picking on May1st!

3/30 THE FLUSH IS ON!!!!!! As of 2:00pm the flush had reached Robertson Rd. and had subsided on the upper nine(Dam-Lusby). I just drove down to the dam and the visibility is suprisingly good...not great but fishable. You also must know that while this is being written we are getting pounded with snow. The last few weeks have been crazy!! Congrats to Jim Peterson and co. on a 26" RAINBOW caught yesterday floating the upper!!!!

3/27 Snow and cold has been the theme all week. The town of Alcova has been virtually vacant of fisherman except for guides fishing for themselves. The fly shop canceled our trips for the week and hope to resume guiding tommorrow. The fish have obviously gotten a well deserved break and it sounds like the flush is starting next week(talked to BofRec and they said it's looking good). I will let you know as things change.

3/25 "Stickin em" has been the phrase of the few hardy souls lingering in and around Grey Reef the past several days. The fishing is good, bordering on great and the river is quiet. I'm sure the forecasted snow and cold have kept a few anglers at home. As for the river, it's still running clear and fish have been eating...Reef worms, PALs, ol. jujubee midge, oregon cheese mini eggs, and the AC Slayer. More snow forecasted for the Alcova area tonight so I'll keep you posted!

3/23 It's pretty much been snowing on Grey Reef for the last 12 hours! This must needed moisture is a welcome sight in an otherwise dry winter and spring. Right now I would have to say we are probably at around 8 in. of accumulation...but it is hard to tell with the wind. We canceled our boats for the day but I managed to sneak out for an hour or so and pitch the big bugs. In one hour of chuck and duck I had 1 solid take and 1 solid fish...a 24" male rainbow that cartwheeled several times before giving in. Not a bad afternoon. I will keep you posted as always and don't forget to check the blog!

3/22 Well it was another nice weekend! Our guides on the water reported good fishing with various patterns being the flies of choice. Impalers, leeches, PALs, jujubee midges, pulsating emergers, and globugs made the top of list. There were several guys wadefishing the public water below the lodge unable to find consistent patterns/fishing. In those situations (heavy boat traffic/fishing) it's never a bad idea to let things rest for awhile, in my opinion. 4X and 5X fluro in clearer water is not a bad idea either. Just a few ideas... From the sounds of it the weather is going to get very interesting tommorrow...last forecast was going with 12-16in of snow in the Alcova area. I will let you know as things develop.

3/18 BEAUTIFUL weather and the fishing is great! The river is in good shape alll the way to Casper. Our boats out yesterday did very well on impaler's, PSLs, PALs, and pulsating emerger's. Seth reported seeing several baetis on the water in the late afternoon. If the warm weather keeps up I'm sure the will have a more regular presence. I will have a more updated/in-depth report this evening.

3/15 Our boats yesterday had some good fishing. We had a fair amount of wind kick up in the afternoon but the guys still managed some really nice fish. Congrats to Lance McCulloch on a great 22.5" brown! A few of our boats spent their entire day wadefishing, which seemed to be really productive. Pulsating emergers, PALs, PSLs, and Reef worms were the flies of choice.

3/10 Despite the cold conditions the last several days we have had some spectacular fishing. Yesterday it snowed and the wind blew all day. We still managed to put two boats on the water and from what they reported, it was non stop fish, top to bottom. I watched the boys in the Cable Hole hook up on every pass. Flies of choice included Reef's simple minded midge, PALs, olive and tan scuds, reef worms, Dorsey's top secret, and orange eggs. I will try and post a blog w/ pictures this evening.

3/6 continued...Stu and the Jeffer's group did well. According to Stu the fly of choice was the pine squirrel leech(natural). They tried an abundance of scuds, midges, and various other patterns, but the leech was the ticket!

3/6 Things have been pretty quite for the last few days. We've had some really BIG wind but the fishing remains good. Stu is guiding today so I should have an updated report in the next few hours.

3/3 Leigh from worldcast anglers spent the last five days fishing the Alcova area. From his reports yesterday was the best day of fishing he had. Leigh concentrated on the upper public access and managed to land a good number of fish over 20". His top bugs were Reef worms, LAZYs, PALs, and a hunchback scud.

3/1 A drastic drop in temp. and some wind made the fishing a little tougher than normal for the guys wadefishing the upper public access on Friday. After a pretty cold start to the day Sat., it warmed up nicely and the fishing was great. A brief overview...I talked with people that fished the Mile, Fremont, and Grey Reef...all reports came back good.

GREY REEF: flow:503cfs, visibility:3-4ft, patterns:bh mohair leech, PSL, Reef worm(#18), tan sowbug(scud)(#18), oregon cheese flashtail egg, jujubee midge(#20), medallion midge(#20).

FREMONT: visibliity:4-5ft, patterns:Reef worm(#18), red brassie(#22), orange scud(#18), jujubee midge chart(#22), Dorsey's Top Secret(#20)

2/26 Seth and Mike floated the upper today and had good fishing. They threw streamers(goldie#6) and managed to move some pretty large trout. The nymph fishing, as always, was good most of the day with the top bugs being various scuds and a bh mohair leech. The river was slighty cloudy due to some runoff in the afterbay courtesy fly shop creek(dry creek bed west of the shop). By no means did it make the river unfishable...visibility was around two feet. The weather forecast is looking pretty good for the weekend so if your around stop in.

2/25 The weather today was beautiful until about 2pm. Low wind, warm, and the upper remains to be in good shape. There was a fanatstic midge hatch this late am/early pm and the fish were eating. Reef worms, Ray Charles, PALs, and jujus did them in!

2/24 The warmer weather has caused a few of the creeks to run a little muddy (Bates, Bear, Bolton, etc.). As of right now the upper is still in very good shape. I will keep you informed as things change.

2/23 The boys out today had a great day on the water. Good numbers of really nice fish despite the wind. It blew most of the day but it did not stop everyone from catching fish. An orange scud(#16) and PAL(#20) worked all day!!! The guys have been on the water alot the past few weeks and continue to rave about the size and condition on the fish this year...it's going to be a good one!

2/22 The general fishing report this weekend was mixed. Some guys did really well, others...not so much. Stu took out the Dunkley boys from Denver, CO and caught fish throughout the day. According to Stu the fishing peaked in the afternoon on PALs#20, jujubee midge#20, Ray Charles#18, and orange scuds#16.

2/19 Water temps on the Miracle Mile and Fremont Canyon continue to hover around the low 30s. Grey Reef is holding at 38.8F. Of the three fisheries, Grey Reef is fishing the best with Reef worms, jujubee midges, and scuds. They have forecasted for some light snow tomm. then clearing into what should be a beautiful weekend.

2/18 We had a couple days of wind but it's back to calm again. Right now it's overcast, mid 30s, and NO WIND. The fishing continues to be great on nymphs...pretty much the same stuff...midges, scuds, and worms. The river is now open all the way to Casper. I'm going to try and make it out today so I will post on the BLOG tonight.

2/15 The fishing report is about the same. Not much has changed except for a little more consistency in a daily midge hatch. The weather guys have some snow scheduled for the middle of the week. I will keep you posted as things change. Don't forget to check out the blog!!!

2/10 Fishing Report for GREY REEF:

FLOW:500cfs VIS:3-4ft TEMP:38.6F PATTERNS: hunchback scud#18, reef worm#18, jujubee midge(chart & olive)#20&#22, FB merc midge#22....Fished a slighty longer leader today(7-8ft) concentrating on deep tailouts and the inside of seams.

2/8 Simply put...this weekend was fantastic! Cool, mid 40s, and NO WIND! The river has opened up below Gov. Bridge, probably not for floating , but fishable in certain sections. There was decent midge hatch today and midge patterns seem to be the ticket. Jujubee midge#20, merc fb midge#20, and PALs caught fish behind Ray Charles(tan)#20, bh mohair leech, and hunchback scud#18. It looks like the weather will change this week...I will keep you posted.

2/5 Spent most of the day at the shop organizing the fly bin and various other things. I'm getting very excited for the spring fishing season! I must say the fly selection this year is going to be awesome! Lots of new bugs, a collection of stuff from the best manufacturers and alot of customs. We are hoping to have all of our products in by Feb. 15, in which case we will be ready to go. If your out and about the shop is open on weekends so please feel free to stop in.

The fishing continues to be very good and the river is open (ice free) to Lusby. The wind blew something awful today...it sounds like a cold front will be passing through this weekend.

2/2 Yesterday was an awesome winter day! Temps right around freezing, blue skies, and no wind...and the fish were hungry. Put in a couple of hours in the late a.m. and caught fat, healthy rainbows between 17" and 21". The flies of the day were #20 tan Ray Charles,#18 Reef Worm, and #22 Crystal Wing Midge(olive).

1/28 Seth,Stu, and Hank have had some great fishing the past few days. Miracle Mile, Fremont Canyon, and Grey Reef all produced good numbers of healthy fish. The story on Grey Reef is as follows...nymphing is the way to go! Depending on the day we have seen some pretty decent midge hatches in which case any emerger in black or olive(ex.#20 PAL) can produce fish...otherwise pine squirrel leeches(crawdad),hot head leech, olive scud(#14),orange scud(#16), and reef worms seem to be the flies of choice. On days when these hatches happen, a shorter leader(indicator to split)<6ft has fished far better than a long one.

1/27 I haven't posted a report in the last few days, reason being it's just to cold to fish. Seth and I ventured out on Sat.and managed to break two rods in the 15F weather. Weather forecast show warmer weather(high30s,low40s) this coming weekend...as always I will keep you posted.

1/23 Cold, wind, and snow have moved into the area this morning. It appears snow has been forecasted for the entire weekend. I will keep you posted as things change.

1/22 We ventured up to the Miracle Mile yesterday. The road was in good shape and the river itself was low and clear. Water temps. were around 33F making the fishing a little tough and the fish we caught very sluggish. The following is the report for the MIRACLE MILE:

FLOW:498cfs TEMP:33-35F CLARITY:GOOD PATTERNS:#4 goldie,#6 Orange Blossom Special,#8 halfback,#16 San Juan (red),#22 Miracle Nymph

1/18 It's clear sailing from Grey Reef to Lusby! A few boats ventured out this morning and from what I heard the fishing was good. I have to say it again...the weather has been amazing...low winds(<15mph) and lots of sunshine! I ventured out this afternoon, a man on a mission, hoping to get a few fish to eat a streamer. Needless to say, I was shocked. For about an hour, fish pounced on the #4 goldie with reckless abandon...really impressive for the middle of Jan. If it wasn't eaten immediately it came about 2/3 into a slow swing. This unbelievable weather is SUPPOSED to continue until the middle of the week...I will keep you posted!

1/16 The weather has been fantastic!! Seth has been out the last several days and has been coming back with some great reports! The fish are looking extremely healthy, with most averaging 18" and looking very well fed! The weather forecast shows unseasonable conditions for the next few days...so if you get a chance, get out, this may not last much longer. IMPORTANT... I'm not sure if it is possible to flloat all the way thru to Lusby??? I will check and post something ASAP.

1/13 Managed to sneak out for the last hour of the day. 38F, sunny, no wind, and the fish are in the mood. Who know's how long this is going to last??? The streamer bite was slow...a few grabs...but still worth the time. Nymphing is the ticket...Seth and I saw lots of scuds in the water(orange and olive) and once we switched to nymphing it was on! A sz.16 orange scud and a sz.20 black rhinestone worked really well. They're forecasting some wind the next few days so we will keep you posted as things change.

1/12 Well, it's been awhile. Presentations, shows, visiting family, etc. took us across the country for the last several weeks. It was fun but it's great to be home! As for the fishing...if you find a favorable day the fishing has been excellent. It appears the next five days are supposed to be above freezing, so it should be good. Current river conditions for GREY REEF:

FLOW: 538cfs CLARITY:Good PATTERNS:crawdad PSL,#20 Ray Charles-tan,#18 PAL,#12 Reef Worm,#20 zebra midge-black.***Gov. Bridge downstream is covered in ice***
